Band is much loved at YVCS. Our students gain the fundamentals of music in our lower grades. This includes a recorder class that is compulsory in third grade. Our beginning band members start in fourth grade and progress all the way through intermediate and advanced band by eighth grade. A wide variety of music is used to spark the enthusiasm and excitement of our students. There are opportunities along the way to play in smaller ensembles and our after school Jazz Band.
George Curtis Van Liew was a band student at YVCS and has continued helping with the band during his high school years, taking on the role of Band Director in the Fall of 2013. He was also trained through years of private instruction and participation in the Walnut Creek Civic Arts Young Performer’s and Diablo Regional Youth Orchestras. His current role with YPO/DRYO is a leadership position with both orchestras.
Mr. Van Liew has composed and conducted several chamber and full orchestral pieces for the civic arts program. He desires to develop the individual student’s musical abilities and disciplines of musicianship. He invites the participation of home school students in the band program.
Mr. Van Liew thoroughly enjoys every aspect of music, including composing, conducting, playing several instruments, and teaching younger musicians. He is excited about what God will do through the Band program this upcoming school year.
